The run up to Christmas can be a bit crazy so when the opportunity to spend New Year at Coombe Mill in Cornwall arose we jumped at the chance. Having visited for the day a few years before, we had been dying to get there for a real holiday and couldn’t believe it was finally happening.
Last week I showed the first glimpse of our holiday and a New Years post showed off a bit more too. I have even blogged about the beaches close by and the bunnies. However, this week I wanted to share more. We have so many photos and had so much fun, its difficult to know where to start. I can tell you though that there is a magical feel to Coombe Mill, you can’t help but relax and unwind and you probably won’t want to leave.
We stayed in Water Mill which is a spacious and welcoming cottage with room for seven. We were thrilled to see it unexpectedly decorated for Christmas and felt at home at once. With period features and modern facilities it really offers the best of both worlds. The stone walls and minstrel gallery give it the wow factor but it is the large log burner which really made it special for us.
At only £15 for use of the fire, a starter pack and as many logs as required over the duration of our stay it was a highlight of our holiday. We couldn’t actually believe how warm and cosy it made the whole cottage feel. Perfect for warming up in front of after the feed run, relaxing around on rainy days and of course chilling out in front of with a glass of wine at night. It gave off so much heat we didn’t need any of the extra heaters available. either.
Talking about rain, it rained quite a bit. Actually scrap that…it rained a lot! But did it ruin our Coombe mill experience? Of course not. In warmer times you would never need to leave the farm but there’s still plenty to do in Cornwall when the weathers bad.
The girls couldn’t wait to get out and feed the animals each morning, even on the wettest of days when the other guests didn’t make it. It seemed like every day there was a new adventure that Farmer Nick would need their help with and they didn’t want to miss a thing. They helped rescue a sheep, actually the same one twice. He wasn’t very clever and got tangled in the brambles two days in a row. They even had to help rehouse a little goat called Sprout who was being bullied by the others. They enjoyed making Sprout and his friend Rocky a bed of hay in their new house and then checked on them both and fed them extra snacks daily. They would have brought them home if they could:
Of course feeding the pigs is always an adventure too. Have you ever heard hungry piglets before? This one will make you giggle and maybe even remind you of mealtimes in your house:
Eggs taste good at Coombe Mill too. The big girls thought they were were the best ever (sadly Daisy couldn’t try them as allergic to egg):
With trails to follow, a beautiful enchanted fairy garden, various playgrounds, an indoor play barn, even a train ride most days, there is plenty to keep your little ones entertained. Of course activity hour was a huge hit too. The girls thought Guy was amazing lighting a real fire and had lots of fun making all sorts of firework crafts.
We enjoyed a whole 9 whole days of magical fun and adventures on the farm and can’t wait to go back again soon. We would definitely recommend it for a UK family break. In fact next time we want to take my Sister, Her Husband and boys with us and stay in the gorgeous Tree Roots. We popped in for a sneaky look before leaving and it would be perfect for the 9 of us!
What a fantastic way to start off 2016. Cant wait to bring you more trips, weekends and holidays this year.
Karen x
I should point out that many of these photos were taken by my lovely Husband. We were both taking them during our break but I have borrowed quite a few of his as they were better!

Coombe Mill - Fiona
January 16, 2016 at 1:07 am (9 years ago)Oh Karen what a beautiful post. Reading about Coombe Mill from a visitor perspective is different to what I see and you really manage to capture the essence of Coombe Mill in your writing and pictures. It’s like everything I try to achieve you understood and embraced, this was a delight to read from start to finish and I love the photos. I remember standing with your husband while he took that lovely river photo and him explaining to me how to do it, seeing it hear I’m determined to have another go myself. I really hope you will all be back with your sister too. Thank you for writing such a gorgeous post about your stay and linking to #CountryKids.

I imagine if the weather was sunnier we would have spent lots more time just hanging out in the fairy garden, its gorgeous in there. Thanks again for a wonderful time and we will definitely be back x
