Did you know in the Georgian times they actually wanted their bottoms to look large? Well my girls can tell you all about that after our latest trip to Osterley House in Surrey.
We visit Osterley regularly and every time is different. There is always something new to see, a different route to take or adventure to be had. Mostly we spend time exploring the beautiful gardens and play trail outside but last weekend my Dad came to stay, so my Sister, her family, all of us and Dad headed off for some fun. It was pretty cold when we arrived and the children decided they would like to go inside for a bit so that’s what we did.
The highlight for the girls (and boys) was the Wig and Bum shop. In fact even the Mummy’s had fun dressing up too much to the amazement of other visitors. I can be spotted trying on a Pannier (a side hoop, hoop petticoat). These were all the rage around Marie Antoinette’s era in the 18th century. It was a support structure a woman wore around her waist to make her dress spread out flat and wide. A very wealthy lady would be one too wide to walk through her own doors. Can you imagine? Rosie had one under her dress too and was delighted with how full her dress look compared to Poppy’s:
Another highlight was the kitchen. All the children were interested in this room:
Now we have been in a few times but the girls get bored half way round or need the toilet etc so we decided to just explore downstairs. It worked really well as all five children were very well behaved. They made it all the way round without any alarms being set off, melt downs or tantrums…result!
After all this fun we headed outside for a bit of a walk. It was such a lovely afternoon we were there for about three hours in total. Not bad for what look like a wintery cold day. Its always much more fun with the Cousins and a hot chocolate stop off:
Of course there was the usual fun at the play trail but this time Mummy and Aunty D were on the swings. We swang so high we screaming louder than the children and kept going until we were almost sick haha:
For a change we decided to leave the cameras at home and just have fun with the children but I couldn’t help but snap a few on my phone. After all it was such a nice day and I do love to record our family fun.
Have you been having fun outdoors this week?

March 28, 2016 at 8:23 am (9 years ago)You like all the same parts of the large estate properties as me, I’m always fascinated by the kitchens and all the mass food preparation, makes cooking for my 8 look easy. those wigs and bums look fab and I’m not surprised to see your girls loving a bit of dressing up. I love all the photos, they look like such a fun time was being had and wouldn’t have guessed until you said they were just on the phone, sometimes enjoying the moment and just a few snaps captures just as much of the day as a big camera. Thank you for sharing with me on #CountryKids
