Last Summer my girls had some gorgeous tshirt dresses from Next that they lived in. They were cute, comfortable and washed really well so I’ve been really excited to see them creeping back into the shops again as the new Spring collections appear. Then I thought I would have a go at making one of my own.
Now I must point out that I am an absolute beginner at sewing. I have never been any good at it or interested either until I started receiving lovely handmade gifts for my girls. Now I want to be able to do it too.
I would love to be able to whizz up beautiful dresses and skirts for my girls but have a way to go yet. Armed with a sewing machine, my ipad and enthusiasm I made the girls some elasticated skirts at the end of the summer but that’s it. This year I want to try again.
I decided to start with a tshirt dress as it seemed like the easiest option. I had brought some pretty fabric (1/2 metre) a little while ago so picked an old pink long sleeved tshirt to go with it. There was nothing wrong with the top I chose but I thought it would match so it got the chop.
There are lots of lovely posts on how to make a tshirt dress but I like this one. I must admit I cut the top off at 5″ instead of 3″ as I wanted it longer than suggested and I would have finished it off with the ties but had no more fabric left. Get me altering patterns when I can barely use a sewing machine.
Anyway here’s the result:
Pretty cute I thought and Poppy did too. In fact she couldn’t wait to show me how comfortable it was as an everyday play dress. She span and twirled, climbed and jumped but mostly she giggled:
We picked up the colours in the dress by teaming it with:
Bright pink tights – M&S
Purple patent shoes – Clark’s
Hair bow handmade by me
Now this really is simple to do. If I can do it, anyone can. It took me around an hour to make but would take next to no time for those who knew what they were doing. What it has done though is given me the confidence to have another go. Watch this space for more pretty little things. Hopefully by the summer I would have whizzed up a pile of cute skirts and dresses for all three of them.
I’m not really sure if it counts as fashionable but I’m linking in with Trendy Thursday anyway.

Really love this. x

February 27, 2014 at 9:17 pm (11 years ago)It looks great. I need to get out the sewing machine manual and work out how to use my mum’s old one. She didn’t get the chance to teach me to use it, so I definitely need to teach myself
